Press Release: Mitchell Institute Salutes the 11th Space Warning Squadron as the recipient of the 2024 General Atomics United States Space Force Unit of the Year Award

June 27, 2025

The Mitchell Institute Spacepower Center of Excellence, an affiliate of the Air and Space Forces Association, extends its most sincere congratulations to the 11th Space Warning Squadron as the recipient of the 2024 General Atomics United States Space Force Unit of the Year Award. This presentation marks the inaugural year for the award.

Commitment, courage, connection, and character are core values for all Guardians. However, the 11th SWS distinguished itself by providing valuable warning on 2,700 missile launches, 744 emergent threats, and 198,000 battlespace awareness events, a 160 percent increase over previous years. In an era where the threat posed by missile attacks is especially dangerous, the mission functions executed by the Knights of the 11th SWS are especially important. Whether helping innovate new tactics, procedures, and concepts of operation, or facilitate the on-ramping of new technology, this is a no fail mission.

Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies is proud of its partnership with the Space Force and General Atomics for helping steward this award. Created in 2024, the General Atomics United States Space Force Unit of the Year Award is presented to tactical level units commanded by board selected O-4 and O-5 commanders and materiel leaders for exceptional contributions to the USSF’s mission to secure our nation’s interests in, from, and to space. The 2024 award was formally presented to the 11th SWS at the Air and Space Force Association’s Warfare Symposium in March of 2025 and a unit-wide presentation occurred in June. The official trophy will reside with the unit until next year’s presentation.
