Commercial space capabilities promise faster, cheaper, and more innovative options for U.S. national security space missions, but they are not a universal solution. This paper argues that commercial space should be treated less as an endless field of ready-made innovation and more as a cultivated garden requiring deliberate acquisition strategy, market awareness, and operational integration. It assesses the “good,” including private investment, faster delivery, expanded capacity, broader industrial-base participation, and innovation; the “bad,” including scaling challenges, overpromising, and provider discretion; and the “ugly,” including startup failure rates, unstable government demand, policy barriers, and classification obstacles. The paper concludes that commercial integration can strengthen a hybrid space architecture only when guided by experienced acquisition professionals, realistic requirements, rigorous testing, stable funding, and collaborative government-industry relationships.
